Academy Internet and local companies get artistic at The Bridge
Brighton, April 2007: Supported by the Brighton & Hove Business Community Partnership (BCP) Academy Internet staff, joined by its clients and associates, descended on the Bridge Community Education Centre in Moulsecoomb to cheer up the Mac’s Place advice centre.
The entrance to Mac’s Place, a confidential drop-in centre providing support and guidance for 11-25 year olds, was previously a door in a plain wall. It needed to be more inviting to the young people visiting, and so a mural was created to liven it up. The characters and design of the mural were the inspiration of a Falmer School student, Elsie Edgar, 14. Once Elsie had drawn the outline onto the wall, the team spent the day colouring in with bright paints.
The project attracted great support from local companies. Academy Internet organised a 27-strong team of painters including staff from American Express, Sussex Wildlife Trust, University of Brighton and Pure. Those who could not all join in on the day, including Plug-In Media, Pure and Griffith Smith, kindly donated to help finance refreshments, extra paint, brushes and other equipment. Momma Cherri’s provided their famous soul food for the lunchtime provision.
Sally Clarke, Community Education Development worker at the Bridge is pleased with the result: “We are delighted with the mural, especially that it was designed by a school student. We hope that the young people who come will feel it is now definitely their space. Everyone who has seen it has commented on how it has brightened up the entrance to Mac’s Place.”
Jason Woodford, Development Director at Academy Internet said: “We jumped at the opportunity to help the Centre. After we achieved the CommunityMark in 2006 we are dedicated to supporting the local area where we can. Thanks to Brighton and Hove BCP, we were able to help make a difference here at Mac’s Place.”
